8 Basic Rules in Oral and Dental Care ••

   

Regular oral and dental care is important for maintaining general health.  Stating that inadequate and incomplete oral and dental care is an important risk factor in the development of many health problems, Periodontology Specialist Dr.  Lecturer  Member Yılmaz made suggestions to protect oral and dental health within the scope of Community Oral and Dental Health Week.

We do not go to the dentist unless we have to

  In the field of education dentistry, mainly therapeutic services are provided.  The habit of applying to the dentist for preventive applications has not yet become widespread.  While complaints of pain take the first place in applications to a dentist, the frequency of applications for those who do not have any complaints is only 9%.

Similarly, in a study, the rate of those who said “I do not go to a dentist unless it is necessary” was determined as 84.4%.  According to another research;  The use of the toothbrush in Turkey seems to be one per year per person.  In order to perform proper oral care, the toothbrush should be renewed every 3-4 months.

Inadequate oral and dental care spoils our health

 Oral and dental health is an integral part of human health and is in constant interaction with many chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart diseases.  Oral and dental health deterioration can threaten general health.

It is thought that gum diseases may be associated with risks such as cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, diabetes, premature birth and birth weight.
The mouth provides a suitable environment for microorganisms to live and spread throughout the body.  For this reason, it is important not to disrupt oral hygiene during the pandemic period.

Early diagnosis can prevent tooth loss

 Dental caries and gum diseases are diseases that can be prevented and controlled to a large extent.  Since they can progress without symptoms, it may be late for many treatment options when they are noticed, but may result in bone and tooth loss.  Early diagnosis and treatment of dental caries and gum diseases are possible and necessary for the protection of oral and dental health with 6-month controls.
Oral care should start from the 6th month

 Oral and dental care should be started in infancy, from the 6th month, when the first tooth appears in the mouth.  12-18.  Oral and dental cleaning can be done after morning and evening meals with the help of cheesecloth or gauze soaked up to the month.  Brushes can be used after the molars erupt.  It is recommended to start using paste from the age of 3 and brushing teeth under parental supervision.

8 basic rules to protect your oral and dental health

 Daily oral and dental care routine should be in the form of brushing teeth twice a day and cleaning the interface with dental floss, interdental brush or dental toothpick after brushing once a day.  Regular removal of plaque on and between teeth helps prevent tooth decay and gum diseases.  In addition, it is possible to protect oral and dental health for a lifetime with the following basic rules; 


1) Teeth should be brushed at least 2 times a day.




 2) Cleaning between teeth should not be neglected




3) Pay attention to brushing the tongue once a day.




 
4) Fluoride toothpastes should be preferred





5) Dentist visits should be made every 6 months.





6) Toothbrush should be changed every 2-3 months





7) No smoking



 
8) Sugary, carbohydrate foods and carbonated beverages 
should be avoided as much as possible.
